Background info:

The Order of Orange-Nassau was established on 4 April 1892 under Queen Regent Emma. In 1891 the personnel union between Luxembourg and the Netherlands was broken. In addition to the exclusive Order of the Netherlands Lion, there were no distinctions in the Netherlands that the government could grant for less important merits, but before that time the king had the opportunity to also in the Netherlands, albeit in his capacity of Grand Duke of Luxembourg, the Luxembourg order of the oak crown. The awards of this order were so often awarded to Dutch people that they spoke about a Dutch order abroad. When Luxembourg got its own dynasty, that possibility no longer existed, and that is why Queen Emma, acting for her minor daughter Wilhelmina, established a new Dutch knighthood order. The Dutch decorative system then consisted of two orders in daily practice.

The preparation of the bill required by the Dutch Constitution for Case Foundations has taken a lot of effort.

The many members of the foreign deputations at the funeral of William III, according to the use of that time, all counted on an appropriate distinction in memory of their presence. With that use, the Dutch government could not break without putting much bad blood.

The honorary medals were only affiliated with the order and bearers were not formally included in the order. In 1996, the honorary medals were abolished and replaced by the Member Class of the Order of Orange-Nassau, which is reserved only for Dutch citizens.
