At the beginning of World War II, the regiment took part in the trench warfare in the Saar region as part of the 25th Infantry Division. The regiment took part in the western campaign in spring 1940 via Aisne, Chemin des Dames to Burgundy. On October 25, 1940, the regiment was reorganized as the 13th Mountain Infantry Regiment at the Heuberg military training area in military district V.
